The Secret to Designing a Kid’s Room

In a world where aesthetic is everything, I believe it’s best to keep it out of the kids room, but not entirely. When designing a kid’s room I like to keep in mind that they are growing and their interests are forever changing. This doesn’t mean don’t consider your child’s interests when designing their room but instead pick those that will last.

Picking a Theme

As mentioned above, if you want your child’s room design to last, think hard about the overall theme of the room. Keep their interests in mind but choose from those that will last longer. For example your child might like Paw Patrol for another a couple of years but they’ll like football well into childhood (ideally).

Think Twice About Characters

This tip falls into the category above of going for a design that will last. I know the Bluey themed bedding is cute but in a couple of years you will be browsing through the stores for a new comforter. This is a controversial opinion, but from a design standpoint, those character themed comforters can be tacky and cheapen the look of the room. Instead opt for solid colors and patterns.

Involve Them

After all, this is their room, so involve them in the selection process as much as you can. Give them a list of paint colors or wallpaper to choose from. Take them with you to the store to pick out throw pillows and other decor.

Keep it Stylish and Functional

Kids’ rooms can easily look like a tornado just went through it when it comes to play time and bringing all of their toys out but it doesn’t mean that storage has to look like a disaster too. You can easily make storing toys aesthetically pleasing and functional. Pick out a wooden toy chest where everything can be thrown in, this makes cleaning up easy since you don’t have to organize toys into separate bins. I love using wicker bins or baskets especially if they’re stackable. You can organize the toys by category and pull out one bin at a time, this avoids the issue of everything being out at once. This also allows for you to easily rotate through toys so they’re not playing with the same toys all the time.
