1. Rugs That are Way Too Small or Too Big
I see this often where there’s a rug and it’s so small that it looks like a postage stamp on an envelope. Generally, you want to find a rug that’s large enough to fit all of the legs of the furniture in the room.
This rugs size in this living room is perfect! It’s big enough to cover the floor under the furniture legs while not taking up the whole floor.
2. Buying Matching Furniture
My old bedroom that sits untouched at my parent’s house has cherry wood matching bedframe, dresser, and nightstand and yes, I picked this all out myself. In my defense, I was 10. Although having matching furniture looks very uniformed and put together, it can also make the room look like it came straight from a showroom. It’s better to choose furniture pieces that coordinate with each other, this will give the room more character than a matching set.
This bedroom design is a dream! Although the furniture isn’t matchy-matchy but the room looks cohesive and beautiful!
3. Hanging Window Treatment The Wrong Way
I always see curtains hung at the same height as the window and although this makes logical sense it is a huge design no-no. For a more high-end look, you’ll want to hang the curtains close to the ceiling and make sure they’re just grazing the floor.
4. Hanging Wall Art Too High or Too Low
The general rule of thumb is to hang artwork at eye level. I usually find the middle of the piece of art and hang it at eye level. This is of course subjective as not all of our eye level is the same. Because I am 5’2 and pretty short I like to hand artwork a few inches higher than my eye level.
5. Giving Height to the Wrong Things
I see this mistake quite often where books are placed under already heigh items like sculptures and even lamps. This isn’t visually appealing and can make your vignette look awkward. Save those books for shorter items that could use the height.
6. Accent Walls
Accent walls were very popular once upon a time, I wanted one myself. Accent walls still exist but they are very outdated.
7. Blindly Following Trends
It can be hard not to hop on a trend but if it doesn’t align with the style of your home, do your home a favor and skip out on it. Often times I see others jump on trends (I’m also guilty), they place said item in their home and it throws off their whole aesthetic. A trend is a trend and odds are it won’t last for long and a new trend will come along. Always stay true to your personal and unique style.
8. Ignoring Scale
I see this happen a lot where people don’t take into account how much room they really have and stuff their home with furniture that is simply taking up room that is already lacking. Try to pick a sofa that isn’t too big to small for your space or opt-in for a smaller dining table that would allow for optimal chair room. It’s better to keep it simple than go over the top.
9. Not Thinking About Function
Functionality is the one most common thing people forget about when it comes to designing their home. Making your home functional is 100x more important than putting all of your effort into making it aesthetically pleasing.
10. Changing Design Style Throughout Your Home
Having a home that is cohesive can be hard if you have children with different styles than your own. What I like to do instead is make sure the rest of the house is cohesive regardless of the kid’s rooms.
Until next time
