Usually, when I create a design I start with a big piece like a sofa or coffee table, but this design started with this tile wall decor from Crate and Barrel. This gorgeous piece is made from volcanic ash, sand and stone, powdered stone, resin, and fiberglass. How cool right? The price is totally justified now.
The Inspiration
The Fyre White Tile Wall Decor did inspire this design but it did not act alone. The Troupe Round Pine Coffee Table also from Crate and Barrel inspired me further to incorporate multiple textures in this design with the table’s flawless marble and wood combination. In addition, the very interesting materials that make up the Fyre Tile Wall Decor also inspired me to use multiple different textures in this design.

The Color Palette
It is not a secret that I love using a neutral color palette in my designs but neutral can get a little boring. After all, this wouldn’t be a Scandinavian design without a neutral color palette. This is why I like using various shades of neutral in combination with a shade of brown. By doing this, dimension is added to a design and it also becomes more eye-catching compared to everything being the same shade. Adding a tiny pop of color like a brown, or my personal favorite: light blue, takes the design from boring to interesting.
The Furniture and the Decor
Combining stone and wood together is my favorite as far as texture combinations go. Putting these two earth materials together creates the most visually appealing work.
Other than stone, my favorite texture is shagreen. Shagreen is a leather-like texture typically from sharks, stingrays, or dogfish but most products are made with a man-made shagreen material. The texture almost looks like tiny little pebbles, so gorgeous and so elegant. I found this shagreen tray from cb2 and it just spoke to me.

I decided to place this piece on yet another textured item, a sherpa material bench. It’s 2022 and sherpa is back and I’m not mad about it! This texture is both comfortable and visually appealing, what more could you want? The two textures along with their colors flow seamlessly together, completing one another.
The cane chairs from Crate and Barrel are a personal favorite of mine. The design of these chairs brings more character to this space. They compliment the color palette flawlessly and work well with all the other textures and materials in this space.

When it comes to the color of decor in a design I like to pull colors from the rug, a piece of art, or the furniture. With this design, I pulled the brown color from the legs of the sofa, which matches the color of the vase. The stack of books and candlesticks I chose because the colors match the rest of the design.
