Designing a run from scratch can be frustrating and confusing. Where do you start? What is the correct order to do things? I have come up with the perfect template to help you redesign your room from furniture and ‘decor to paint Color, finishes, and everything else in between. I use this exact process myself so I can tell you from experience that it works.
Design Style and Mood
I like for this to be the first thing I chose because it will dictate my other choices in color schemes, furniture styles, and finishes.
The Color Scheme
By Color scheme I don’t mean pick specific colors but rather choose a family of colors such as warm neutrals, cool neutrals, bold colors, etc. This will make it easier when choosing furnishings finishes and accents.
The Floors
This is best to do next because of the obvious, you don’t want to bring in furniture, move that furniture, put it on the floors, and then put the furniture back. Sounds like a pain right? Because you’ll already have a color scheme, it will make it easier to pick a stain for hardwood floors or a color carpet.
The Rug
This is very controversial because most people will tell you to pick the paint color first and it makes logical sense but hear me out because I might just blow your mind. The reason I love picking the rug next is that you already know what color scheme you’re going with but what about everything else? Picking the rug before anything else gives you something to base your design on and will also help you make decisions on other things like fabric and finishes. You can pull colors from the rug to help you make decisions. I also like using colors in a rug for accents. If you do this based on wall color it may be harder to make the room look more cohesive, especially if you have never designed a room before. I actually always pick wall color last because you will already have everything you want in the space and that will make picking the wall color a lot easier. Although it will be a pain to cover all of your new furniture to paint the walls, it is easier to repaint a room than it is to send back a sofa or worse, get stuck with if it can’t be returned and no longer works for your space, so that was my long-winded way of saying pick the rug first.
And Now for The Fun Part: Picking Furniture
This is my absolute favorite step! Now that you have your design style, mood, color scheme, floors, and rug all picked this step should be fairly easy. This is where the rug comes into play. Use the rug to your advantage and pick furniture that matches the colors in the rug, or colors that go well together. This will give your room a more cohesive look.
The Accents
As previously mentioned, I love using the rug to pick out colors for decorative objects and accents. Pulling color from the rug for these pieces makes your room look more cohesive because you will be bringing out color already in the space instead of adding new colors. This will pull the room together!
The Paint Color
Paint can be one of the hardest things to choose but following these steps will make it very easy! This is where you complete the whole room, and choose a color that is already in the space or one that goes well with every color present!
I hope these tips help you create the most gorgeous space without a headache!
Until next time!
