Texture is an important part of interior design, it adds contrast to every room which is essential for balance and depth. Texture makes a space feel comfortable and gives character to a design. What exactly is texture? It’s an object’s physical feeling or visual appearance. Adding texture may seem complicated, but where do I start? But I promise it’s very easy to add texture and make your home beautiful, comfortable, and give it character.
Mix Textiles
Do you have linen curtains to match your linen throw pillows which sit on a linen sofa? Mix it up a little! Switch out the linen throw pillows for ones with a cotton or velvet fabric and linen curtains for chiffon. You can mix up fabrics such as cotton, boucle, linen, leather, and velvet. Add a boucle pillow to a leather chair or a comfy throw blanket. You can also mix it up and add a faux cowhide rug to the room.
Finishes and Materials
If you’re looking to add wallpaper instead of paint, look into grasscloth wallpaper to add texture to your walls. You can also add box molding to your walls to keep them interesting. Mix wood with metal and even stone! I love adding a stone coffee table and pairing it with wood side tables. Another favorite of mine is mixing wood with marble; the combinations are endless!
Add Layers on Layers
You can layer a book with a stoneware vase with flowers. Layer a cowhide rug with a jute rug, this is one of my favorite combinations which adds texture and character to a room! Layer your bedspread with cotton throw pillows, a Belgium linen comforter, and a fuzzy blanket.
Don’t Focus on Just Fabric and Furniture Finishes.
Look beyond your furniture to add texture! One of my favorite ways to add texture to a room is through artwork. When you think of artwork you may think of framed paintings, drawings, and prints but there is more to artwork than framed pieces. Add a sculpture to your bookcase or built-ins. I love including sculptures of natural materials to bring an organic element into the mix. YOu can mix finishes of sculptures, decorative objects, bowls, and vases. I wouldn’t stop there! Flip some books around on a bookcase so that the spine is facing the back of the self; the pages of the book will add texture to the bookcase and the rest of the room. Woven baskets and vases can be added to a space for texture.
